My 10yr old daughter has ridges on her finger nails..what are they?

Calcium deficitMy 10yr old daughter has ridges on her finger nails..what are they?
Sounds like it could be a vitamin definciency. I'd take her to the doctor to have her vitamin and mineral levels checked just to make sure.My 10yr old daughter has ridges on her finger nails..what are they?

Can be genetic, but also diet related. Is she getting a balanced diet?
It's one of three things:

- calcium deficency

- genetic

- a disease

Probably it is one of the first two things - don't worry too much but mention it next time she has a check up with a doctor.
it depends on the way they are going. if they go up and down they are fine but if they go side to side that means that she has been sick really bad in her past?
Similar thing with my little sister turned out to be a calcium deficiency and nothing to worry about. I'm no Doctor though!
It may be that she has damaged the nail plate (the bit under the finger nail)by banging it on something hard so that the nail grows back ridged....
I don't think it's serious but it's probably a vitamin defiency.
If they follow the length of the nail they are perfectly normal and natural.

If they are 'dents' in the nail accross its width, then something is causing damage in the quick or under the skin.

But if they are accompanied by white marks under the nail, then it indicates a vitamin deficiency, and that you should get checked out.

Does she drink more carbonated drinks than milk/water?
This can be a normal thing, genetic or most commonly a calcium deficiency, your doctor can tell you alot more than i can, and they may go away after time if you can manage to balance her diet with a bit more calcium, ( instead of a cup of cola give her a milkshake and tell her she will grow nice and strong) another sign to indicate calcium deficiency is if your daughters teeth are white but look like parts are going slightly see- through.

hope this helps
it could be because she bites her fingernails.. but if she doesn't bite her fingernails.. then its calcium buildup.. you could just go see a doc..
